World Sight Day is celebrated across the world on the second Thursday of October month. This year it’s falling on 13th October. The day is celebrated to create awareness about vision impairment, blindness as well as sight related problems. World Sight Day portrays the significance of good vision for everyone. Our eyes, which are an important part of the body, are delicate and need proper care just like other organs of the body. It is our eyes that help us see the beauty of our mother nature. Therefore, it becomes imminent for us to take care of our eyes in the best possible ways. Follow the below guidelines to take best care of your eyesight:
Watch what we eat: Diet plays an important role when it comes to maintaining healthy eyes. Consume green leafy vegetables, fruits, eggs and almonds to keep your eyes healthy. Also, fishes such as tuna, salmon and other oily fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E. Research suggests that these nutrients might help ward off age-related eye problems like macular degeneration and cataracts.
Always wear sun glasses while out in the sun: Wearing sun glasses while going out is an important factor in proper eye care. Sun glasses protect our eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Too much UV exposure can lead to cataracts and macular degeneration.
Choose the right spectacles or eye lenses: Make sure that your spectacles or contact lenses are of the latest technology and sufficient for the activities that you do. Regularly clean them and know measure to keep them safe for your eyes.
Relaxation exercises for eyes: Even eyes require certain relaxation exercises just like any other muscle in the body. Sit quietly with your eyes closed and place your hands together – palm to palm – and rub them together until they become warm. Place them gently over your eyes and let your eyes relax avoiding light to come in. Do this whenever you can during the day, particularly when you’re working continuously on the computer. Besides, rest your eyes by looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds after every 20 minutes. Also, try to get up and take a 15-minute break after every 2 hours.
Eye Check-ups: An eye check-up is an indispensable part for every human being and not just for people encountering vision problems. It should be part of a normal health check-up routine to enjoy healthy eyesight.
