5 natural home remedies for the treatment of gingivitis

Gingivitis is an oral infection that causes inflamed and bleeding gums. There are more than 20 million cases per year of gingivitis in India. Swelling, loose teeth, redness, bad breath, irritation in teeth and gums, bleeding while brushing are some of the common symptoms of gingivitis. When we do not brush properly and timely, plaque forms on our gums and teeth, causing gingivitis. Some other factors that may also lead to gingivitis are smoking, diabetes, age, genetics and dry mouth. However, this bacterial infection can be easily managed at home using natural remedies.

Here are some natural and effective methods to treat and prevent gingivitis and other gum diseases

  1. Turmeric
  • The curcumin present in the turmeric has certain anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can treat the swelling, pain, and reduce the bleeding and plaque formation in the gums.
  • Turmeric is full of bioactive compounds and has rapid healing properties. This spice cum herb removes all the unhealthy bacteria from the mouth.
  • Make a dental paste using 1 teaspoon of turmeric and half teaspoon of salt. Apply that paste on your teeth and massage using your toothbrush.

  1. Baking soda
  • Baking soda acts as a natural antiseptic, and counterbalances the effects of acid in your mouth and prevent the risk of oral infections.
  • Mix half a teaspoon of baking soda with water and stir it to make a paste. Use your brush or finger to rub the paste all over your teeth and gums. You can add a few drops of lemon juice or vinegar in it.
  • You can also make a baking soda mouth wash. Mix one tablespoon of baking soda in a cup of water. Use this mouth twice a week to protect your teeth from decaying early.

 

  1. Oil pulling
  • Oil pulling is one of the oldest methods used to get rid of bacteria that lead to gingivitis. Oil pulling cleans the buildup of plaque in your mouth and makes your gum stronger than before.
  • Sesame oil or coconut oil can be, used for the oil pulling method. Put half a tablespoon of of coconut or sesame oil in your mouth, and move through it all the areas of the mouth. Follow this method daily before brushing your teeth.

  1. Aloe vera
  • Antibacterial, antifungal properties of aloe vera help in fighting with bacteria that develops gingivitis.
  • Aloe vera prevents the buildup bacteria that cause plaque. The severe pain in teeth, swelling of gums, and bleeding of gums can also be, treated by using aloe vera.
  • Cut an aloe vera leaf and separate the pulp out of it. Rub that aloe vera pulp on your gums, leave it for a couple of minutes and gargle afterwards. Follow this method twice daily, until you get relief from the symptoms of gingivitis.

  1. Lemon
  • Lemon is an abundant source of vitamin-C, and has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, which is very effective in dealing with a bacterial infection.
  • Mix one teaspoonful of lemon juice with one spoon of water. Dip your brush in this solution and apply it your teeth for one minute.
  • Peel a lemon, rub that lemon peel on your teeth and gums and rinse with cold water. However, excessive use of this method can make your mouth sore and dry.
