Diabetes affects the sexual health of women. These problems occurs both in women with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and also in those without diabetes. You can prevent these sexual health problems by carefully managing diabetes and controlling your glucose intake. Here is a list of the ways diabetes affects the sexual health of women:

  1. Through infections: Having much sugar in the blood can help the fungus that causes yeast infection grows faster. This yeast infection is called Vaginitis. When not treated, this can lead to very severe urinary tract infections. Treatment for this infection includes; creams and medication. Better blood sugar control.
  2. Trouble reaching orgasm: Most women cannot reach orgasm because of this sexual health problem. Sex becomes uncomfortable and very painful to engage in. It can also cause nerve damage making it hard for the woman to experience pleasure that leads to orgasm. Psychological problems also lessen sexual desire. Be sure to discuss this with your doctor, as they can give you valuable advises.
  3. Vaginal tightness (vaginismus): Diabetes related problems can cause muscle spasms around the vaginal opening, vaginismus can make it difficult or painful to have sex. “Kegel” muscle-relaxation exercises can help. Practice by tightening the muscles to stop the flow of urine, then relaxing. Use this technique before or during sex.
  4. Vaginal dryness: If diabetes is left untreated it can also lead to poor vaginal lubrication caused by low hormone levels; blood vessel damage; or nerve damage (which prevents arousal and fluid production). Stress, age, pregnancy, and certain medications can also reduce the production of lubrication. Lubricants are an easy solution. Hormonal therapy may also be appropriate.
